Ask Mr. Byte

Question:     I use my laptop for work and home use. I travel sometimes. How can I be sure that if I lost my laptop my information wont fall into the wrong hands

Answer:    Laptops have become thief magnets, attracting everything from common thugs and dishonest housekeeping employees to sophisticated con-men, hi-tech crime rings, and industrial spies. In 1999 alone, over 319,000 laptops were reported stolen. Thousands more were simply misplaced or left in hotel rooms, restaurants, airports, cabs or coffee shops by busy employees rushing around. Protect your capital investment and your company's secrets by following these guidelines to better laptop security.

Place your business card or name on the palm rest of the laptop. In the event you see someone take your laptop its as simple as opening up your computer to prove that it belongs to you.

While traveling make sure your laptop bag doesn't look live everyone else's laptop bag. Put a tag or decoration on it and make sure you keep a close eye on it when it travels through the conveyor at the airport checkpoint.

The Mac Book Air is stirring up the portable computer crowd as the thinnest laptop ever made.Watch the TV ad.  The Air has a Core 2 Duo chip in a specially designed package and small motherboard that help reduce its thickness. The LCD screen is backlit with LEDs, which saves battery, and allows the screen to be dimmed much lower than CCFL screens for additional battery. It has Wireless N/B/G, Bluetooth 2.1 EDR, and is available in two basic configurations: $1799 for a 1.6GHz chip, plus 2GB of RAM and a 80GBs 4200 RPM Drive. Tip of the Month

Securing your Wi-Fi connection. Why and how do I do it??

Many folks setting up wireless home networks rush through the job to get their Internet connectivity working as quickly as possible. That's totally understandable. It's also quite risky as numerous security problems can result. Today's Wi-Fi networking products don't always help the situation as configuring their security features can be time-consuming and non-intuitive. The recommendations below .

Consult your router manufacturer manual or visit their website.

Change Default Administrator Passwords (and Usernames if possible)

Set up a WEP key security key. This is a password you set up to stop anybody from entering and accessing your internet.

Enable MAC Address filtering

Change you default SSID (The name of your wireless connection)

Disable SSID Broadcast

Insurance Tip

From: Jerry Lorenz Insurance Expert

Here is an excellent way to inventory your personnel belongings for a claim for your home insurance.

Experiencing a loss of your personal property as a result of fire, theft or other reasons, can be devastating.  Most likely you have been accumulating your belongings over many years, and to try and remember what those items are so they can be replaced in the event of a loss can be difficult.  Conducting a home inventory now—before a loss occurs—is important as it will help you in determining items that were lost, stolen, or destroyed and will expedite the claims process.  It will provide you with a record of your possessions and peace of mind that you have the protection you need.  An inventory of your personal belongings is important no matter if you own a home, a condo, or rent.

So, get started today with our easy to use program.  This program will guide you in three simple steps.  You will have the ability to upload photos and videos, and generate reports.
